The FSAI has also recalled SuperValu Seed Mix 200g, Gem Sesame Seeds 1kg and several batches of Sysco Sesame Seeds.

Sesame seeds contaminated with salmonella are the common thread linking the affected products, which follow earlier recalls of SuperValu and other branded sesame lines during the week.

It is the latest in a run of consumer alerts, coming soon after another recent public health warning.

The FSAI warned that people infected with salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, though this can range from six to 72 hours.

The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody, alongside fever, headache and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Elderly people, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill, the authority said.

Retailers have been asked to remove the implicated batches from sale, and shoppers are advised not to eat the affected products.
