He also spoke of Varadkar’s “naivety”, “inexperience” and arrogance in relation to the Brexit negotiations.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson has referred to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as a “nutcase” and criticised the “naivety, inexperience, arrogance on his part” for siding with EU negotiators during the Brexit negotiations.

Wilson, the Brexit spokesperson for his party’s 10 MPs in Westminster, was speaking in London on Wednesday after Varadkar made a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

According to Politico, Wilson said that the DUP’s view of the Brexit negotiation process has changed completely since Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as Taoiseach

“It was always our view at the very start of this process that the biggest ally we would have when it came to negotiating with the European Union was Dublin, and indeed that always was the impression we got when Enda Kenny was in power, but since this nutcase Varadkar has taken over that things have all changed,” Wilson said.

Wilson attributed the change to “naivety, inexperience, arrogance on his (Varadkar’s) part.”

Wilson’s comments came in the aftermath of Varadkar’s speech in Strasbourg, where he said there can be no “backsliding” on the progress made in Brexit negotiations to date.

“The breakthrough achieved before Christmas means that the United Kingdom has guaranteed that, whatever its future relationship with the European Union, a hard border on the island of Ireland will be avoided. The Common Travel Area and its associated rights will be maintained,” Varadkar said.

“As the negotiations move forward, we will continue to rely on your support and solidarity as we work to ensure that what has been promised in theory is delivered in practice. There can be no backsliding.”
