Quite the haul…

Customs at Dublin Port have made one of the largest seizures of black market cigarettes in Irish history when they seized 9.6 million cigarettes on Tuesday.

The haul of cheap whites branded ‘Excellence’, was concealed inside a container said to be carrying tyres.

The illicit cargo was located when the Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner was deployed as a result of routine profiling.

Inside the container was 9.6 million cigarettes with a retail value of just over €4.5 million. Revenue claim it would have represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €3.8 million.

The cargo arrived on ship from Rotterdam on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Revenue said they continue, “To target the supply of illicit tobacco products with a view to disrupting the supply chain, seizing the illicit product and prosecuting those responsible.”
