Customers affected by the increase will be notified.

In another spell of bad news for people feeling the pinch of increases in the cost of living, Eir has announced that some customers will face another price hike soon.

The telecommunications company confirmed that 25% of customers would be impacted by fees increasing across its fixed voice, broadband, television and mobile services from August.

Current customers will see an increase of €5 per month implemented to their bills from August onwards.

Customers affected by the increase will be notified, and will be free to opt-out of their contract at no additional charge.

From April 2023, Eir will be changing to an annual automated price increase mechanism, carried out at a rate of the consumer price index as defined in January of that year plus an additional 3%.

The price increases will affect both current and new customers.

Eir has said that the annual automated increase is to “assist with increased operating costs, supporting further investment, while removing the ambiguity of price increases for customers and ensuring price corresponds with inflation rates”.

The increase in fees is the latest in the growing costs of living in Ireland.

The cost of petrol has reportedly risen to over €2 a litre at a number of Irish forecourts as the country’s cost of living crisis shows no signs of slowing down.

According to recent information from Pumps.ie, a website listing fuel prices based on contributions from the public, petrol prices per litre have risen past €2 at various stations in the capital, with some reaching as high as €2.07.

One TD has said that the toll for using the M50 should be scrapped to help ease the financial burden on the public.

Peadar Tóibín made the comments on Newstalk’s Lunchtime Live programme where he described the current cost of living situation as “crippling”.

“People are finding it difficult to keep a roof over their heads, pay their rent, put fuel in their car even at the moment,” he said.
