Election 2011: results as they came in (Sunday)

The results for the 31st Dáil are continuing to come in... slowly.

JOE

2325:

The recount in Galway West started at 7.10pm and the one in Laois-Offaly just over an hour later. Wicklow aren’t even starting their recount until tomorrow morning at 9am, so we’re going to leave our live tracker there for now… unless something actually happens tonight.

If not, we’ll have the news of what happened in these three constituencies tomorrow (hopefully).

Just one last thing: Sinn Fein’s John Brady described Dick Roche’s call for recount as a “final kicking of the people from an outgoing minister before he leaves power.” Roche was eliminated after getting just 3 votes less than his FF stablemate Pat Fitzgerald. Either way, he’ll probably be gone in the next round or two.

2317:
It’s reported on RTE that the recount in Galway West will continue tonight “for as long as it takes to complete. Count then likely to adjourn and resume in the morning.” But if they complete, why will they need to adjourn and resume? Unless they will recount to the point they were at when the recount was requested and will then stop.

Just the three constituencies left to finish their counting (or rather, recounting): Galway West, Laois Offaly and Wicklow.

2300:
Nothing to declare at this point, other than the fact that Eamon Gilmore was on Newstalk earlier, saying that the rooms allocated to Labour in the Dáil are too small to contain the parliamentary party. They’ve got their first meeting on Tuesday – maybe they can swap with Fianna Fáil before then?

Sorting out who’ll be taking seats in the Seanad will start tomorrow, with Micheál Martin declaring he wants to put women forward. No great surprise there, given that there are now no female Fianna Fáil TDs.

2228:

So this is where we are now:

Recounts are going on in Galway West and Laios-Offally. There’ll be a full recount tomorrow of all the Wicklow votes where FF’s Dick Roche is within a whisker of losing his seat.

Since last updating, the following three TDs have been elected in Galway East: Fianna Fáil’s Michael Kitt who topped the poll after the eighth count, Fine Gael’s Paul Connaughton Jnr and Ciaran Cannon joined him…

And, finally, Colm Keaveney has gained the first ever Labour seat there.

1632:

Fine Gael’s JP Phelan, Phil Hogan and Pat Deering have been elected in the final count in Carlow-Kilkenny.

1618:

Total recount in Galway West at the request of Fidelma Healy Eames of Fine Gael. This one won’t be finished for a long time.

1547:

Labour’s Derek Nolan has taken the second seat in Galway West.

1530:

Labour’s Ann Phelan and Fianna Fáil’s John McGuinness have been elected on the 12th count in Carlow Kilkenny.

1516:

People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett takes the final seat in Dún Laoghaire.

1453:

Tom Fleming and Micheal Healy-Rae (both IND) have been elected in Kerry.

1425:

Fine Gael’s Mary Mitchell O’Connor has just been elected in Dun Laoghaire. The final seat is almost certain to go to Richard Boyd Barrett.

1357:

In the eighth count in Laois-Offaly, Charles Flanagan has been elected for Fine Gael.

1346:

In the 12th count at Cork South Central, Michael McGrath of Fianna Fáil has been elected. So far it’s the only constituency with two FF TDs.

1343:

In the 13th count, Peter Fitzpatrick of Fine Gael has been elected without reaching the quota. He isn’t at the count, he’s with the Louth GAA team for the National League.

1336:

In the fifth count in Kerry South, Brendan Griffen of Fine Gael has been elected.

1330:

Fianna Fáil’s Eamon Ó Cuív has been elected on the 8th count in Galway West, while Fine Gael’s Sean Barrett has been elected in Dún Laoghaire.

1242:

In the 12th count, Gerald Nash of Labour has been elected in Louth. The next seat should go to Louth manager Peter Fitzpatrick of Fine Gael.

1239:

Labour’s Ivana Bacik has been eliminated in Dun Laoghaire. The bulk of her preferences should elect the ULA/People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd-Barrett ahead of Mary Hanafin.

1220:

In the 11th count in Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer of Fine Gael has been elected.

1126:

Women were hardest hit during Fianna Fáil’s disastrous election, as the party didn’t manage to get any female deputies into the Dáil.

Fianna Fáil deputy leader Mary Hanafin hasn’t yet been eliminated in Dun Laoghaire, but looks certain to lose her seat as she isn’t expected to get the lion’s share of Ivana Bacik’s second preferences.

Tánaiste Mary Coughlan also failed to get elected, losing the seat she had held in Donegal South West since 1987.

Máire Hoctor of Tipperary North, Margaret Conlon of Cavan Monaghan, Áine Brady of Kildare North and Mary O’Rourke of Longford Westmeath also lost their seats.

None of Fianna Fáil’s new female candidates including Averil Power managed to make enough in roads to contend for a seat.

1112:

Another TD has been elected in Cork South Central – Fine Gael’s Simon Coveney.

1054:

Ciarán Lynch has contributed to JOE recently for our Ask the TDs feature. Click here if you want to read his articles. Other contributers included Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty, Fianna Fáil’s Dara Calleary and Fine Gael’s Damien English – all of whom managed to get elected.

1039:
