Enda Kenny and Micheál Martin have both failed to be voted in as Taoiseach

Carl Kinsella

Enda Kenny and Micheál Martin have both failed to be voted in as Taoiseach by their fellow TDs at the second time of asking.

Mr. Kenny procured even fewer votes than he had done the first time Fine Gael nominated him to continue in his role as Taoiseach, and was defeated by 80 votes to 51. Not a single independent TD (of which there are 15) supported the Mayo man.

All seven Labour TDs chose to abstain from supporting their coalition partner’s nominee for Taoiseach.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was then nominated to the office by his own party, and was defeated by a wider margin of 95 to 43.

Gerry Adams announced that he would be seeking nomination a second time after having been defeated the first time around.
