Irish cricketer Eoin Morgan, who has been captain of the English cricket team since the 2015 World Cup, has been named on the Queen’s New Years Honours list for 2019.

Morgan played a pivotal role in England’s Cricket World Cup success earlier this year, and was named alongside four of his team-mates. He has been awarded the suffix of CBE, which stands for Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Also included among this year’s recipients is Snow Patrol lead singer Gary Lightbody, who yesterday paid tribute to his late father, who passed away shortly before Christmas. Lightbody is from Bangor in County Down.

In addition to writing some of the most popular songs of all time – including ‘Chasing Cars’ – Lightbody has also done charity work, and this year established the Lightbody foundation, which provides assistance in areas such as mental health, depression and youth engagement in Northern Ireland.

The 43-year-old singer has been awarded an OBE, which stands for Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Also featured on this year’s list were all three members of music group The Priests: Father Eugene and Father Martin O’Hagan, who are from Derry, and Fatherr David Delargy from Antrim. They have received MBEs, which stands for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
