Family of Halyna Hutchins sues Alec Baldwin over film set shooting

The cinematographer died last year while working on the movie Rust.

Late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ family has filed a lawsuit against actor Alec Baldwin.

Ms Hutchins, 42, died in October of last year when a gun held by Baldwin accidentally went off on the set of indie film Rust.

Lawyers for Ms Hutchins’ husband Matthew and young son Andros have now filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and other members of the Western.

The lawsuit alleges that the actor “recklessly shot and killed” Ms Hutchins and that Baldwin and the other defendants “failed to perform industry-standard safety checks and follow basic gun safety rules while using real guns”.

“Halyna Hutchins deserved to live, and the Defendants had the power to prevent her death if they had only held sacrosanct their duty to protect the safety of every individual on a set where firearms were present instead of cutting corners on safety procedures where human lives were at stake, rushing to stay on schedule and ignoring numerous complaints of safety violations,” it states.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

In response, lawyers for Baldwin and fellow producers on Rust have stated that any claim the actor was reckless is “entirely false”, Deadline reports.

Investigators have not filed criminal charges over the death of Ms Hutchins but have not ruled them out against anyone involved.
