Man dies following fatal road crash in Laois

A man has died following a fatal road traffic collision in Laois.

The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning, 17 June.

According to An Garda Síochána, the single-vehicle collision occurred on the L1640 between Ballacolla and Rathdowney at approximately 1am on Friday.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, a man aged in his early 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

A male passenger, aged in his early 30s, was injured during the collision. He was treated at the scene, with his injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

As of Friday morning, Gardaí and emergency services remain at the vicinity as a technical examination is carried out. The Ballacolla to Rathdowney Road has been closed off to traffic, with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Any road users who may have camera footage – including dash-cam – and were travelling on the Rathdowney Road between 12,30am and 1.30am are asked to make this footage available.
