A woman in her 60s has been killed in a collision in Leitrim

The incident took place shortly after midday on Thursday.

A woman in her 60s has died following a single vehicle road collision that occurred in Leitrim on Thursday afternoon.

The fatal crash took place on the Castlecara Road in Carrick-on-Shannon shortly after midday.

A female driver was fatally injured when the car she was driving left the road.

Her body was later removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Sligo where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The road where the collision occurred is currently closed at time of writing, with local diversions put in place.

Garda forensic collision detectives will examine the scene at first light on Friday morning.
