Fianna Fáil to ask Bertie Ahern to rejoin the party

Conor Heneghan

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will be asked to rejoin the party, according to reports.

According to Newstalk, a motion from the party’s Dublin Central branch proposing that a letter be written to Ahern asking him to rejoin the party was passed unanimously on Tuesday evening.

Ahern, who served as Taoiseach from 1997 until 2008, resigned from the Fianna Fáil party in 2012 after a motion was proposed to expel him as a member of Fianna Fáil following the revelations of the Mahon Tribunal.

Although accusations of corruption against Ahern were not sustained, he was found to have received payments from developers and his explanations for those payments were “summarily rejected”.
