Ahern, who served as Taoiseach from 1997 until 2008, resigned from the Fianna Fáil party in 2012 after
a motion was proposed to expel him as a member of Fianna Fáil following the revelations of the Mahon Tribunal.
Although accusations of corruption against Ahern were not sustained, he was found to have received payments from developers and his explanations for those payments were "summarily rejected".
