Five suspected pipe bombs made safe in Offaly

A number of buildings were evacuated in Offaly on Wednesday night after five suspected pipe bombs were discovered.

An Army EOD team attended the scene after being alerted to the situation by gardaí.

Gardaí called the bomb disposal team to investigate the suspect devices that were found at a premises on the Dublin Road area of Edenderry. The team arrived on the scene just after 9pm and the operation lasted for about two hours.

The scene was cordoned off and nearby buildings were evacuated for the duration of the operation.

Five suspected pipe bombs were identified, made safe and removed for further examination.

Investigations are continuing.
