He passed away on Monday following a short illness.

Seán FitzPatrick, the former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, has died aged 73.

His family confirmed that he died on Monday following a short illness.

Fitzpatrick was instrumental in building Anglo Irish Bank into Ireland’s third largest bank prior to the financial crisis which collapsed the bank and placed losses of nearly €30 billion onto the Irish State.

He resigned as chairman of the bank in December 2008.

In an interview with Marian Finucane in the days after his resignation, Fitzpatrick declined to apologise for his role in the crisis.

“The cause of our problems are global,” he said.

“So I can’t say sorry with any degree of sincerity and decency. But I can say thank you,” he added.

In May 2017, Fitzpatrick was acquitted on criminal counts of allegedly misleading Anglo’s auditors about loans concealed from the public between 2002 and 2007.
