Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen is “seriously ill” in hospital, according to reports.

A report in local publication Offaly Express has claimed that Cowen was hospitalised in Dublin on the evening of Thursday, 4 June. According to Midlands 103fm, Cowen is at the Beacon Hospital in Sandyford.

It is the second time this year that Cowen, 59, has been brought to hospital. In May of this year, Cowen fell ill at an Oireachtas golfing event and resultantly spent several days in Limerick Regional Hospital.

Cowen, who is an Offaly native himself, was Taoiseach of Ireland and leader of Fianna Fáil between 2008 and 2011. Before that, he was Minister of Finance between 2004 and 2008.

His brother, Barry Cowen, is still a TD for the Offaly constituency.
