Four more Luas lines and a second Metro line planned for Dublin in the next 20 years

Public transport could be set for radical change in Dublin.

A second Metro line and four additional Luas lines are part of a €10billion plan by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to reduce traffic in the capital and encourage greater use of public transport.

According to the Irish Independent, the NTA will today reveal details of a multi-billion euro plan to improve road and public transport networks and cycle paths as part of a move towards more sustainable forms of transport and to prevent the effects of climate change.

The plan, titled ‘Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area 2016-2035’ proposes the development of a Metro South from St. Stephen’s Green to Bride’s Glen, which would link with the proposed Metro North to Dublin Airport, which isn’t expected to be up and running until 2026.

The plan also proposes that the Luas be extended to reach Bray, Finglas, Lucan and Poolbeg/Ringsend and that the Dart should incorporate Drogheda, Hazelhatch and Maynooth.

Proposals are also in place for higher frequency bus services and improved cycle networks, increased park and ride facilities and a reduction in the number of parking spaces in the city centre, with the overall aim of significantly reducing the number of trips made by car.

The NTA estimate that although implementing the plan would cost €10 billion, it would be worth €13 billion to the exchequer, due to shorter journeys leading to increased savings.

The report is subject to public consultation until November 13.
