The Department of Social Protection has launched an investigation into “a problem” with payments of the fuel allowance lump sum that was due for payment this week.

Those eligible for the fuel allowance – a payment under the National Fuel Scheme to help with the cost of heating one’s home during the winter months – had this week been due to receive a lump sum of €315, one of two lump sums that make up a total of €607.50 to help cover the cost of heating from October to April.

The schemes affected by the delay to the lump sum payments are:

  • State Pension Contributory
  • Widow(er)’s Contributory Pension
  • Invalidity Pension
  • State Pension Non-Contributory
  • Disability Allowance
  • National Fuel Scheme

A statement from the Department of Social Protection on Wednesday read: “There is a problem with some payments of the fuel allowance lump sum due for payment this week. This is currently being investigated.

“Arrangements will be made to pay customers impacted by this issue as soon as possible.”

More information on fuel allowance is available on the Citizens’ Information website.
