Galway parish offering drive-thru ashes for Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Get your ashes on the go.

Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Lenten period, leading up to Easter week.

The day derives its name from the placing of repentance ashes on the foreheads of participants to either the words “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or the dictum “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”.

Which is a bit grim, but how and ever.

Of course, while many are eager to profess their repentance, or just not feel left out, hectic work schedules and responsibilities can get in the way. Fortunately, a Galway church is providing a drive-thru ashes service so people can get their ashes to go.

The service takes place outside St. Patrick’s Church in Glenamaddy, Co. Galway, today between 8.30am and 9.30pm. More details can be found at the church’s official Facebook page.

This isn’t the first time that the parish has offered the service, it dates back at least two years and wins great press each time. We expect to see services like this popping up more and more across the country in future.
