If you’re in the Tribal County next week, this charity event for Syria could be for you.

The Clayton Hotel in Galway will play host to ‘Galway Night For Syria’ on Thursday 16 March, an event that has been organised to help those who have lost their homes during the recent conflict.

A group of local people have put the event together, with all proceeds going to Trócaire’s work in Syria and 100% of the money donated used to provide housing and food for Syrian children and families who have been displaced to neighbouring countries.

“We are a local group from Galway who have come together because we share the same vision,” said Sandra Carroll, one of the event’s organisers.

“We really wanted to help by raising funds to assist the displaced people of Syria, who we are painfully aware are really suffering. We all saw the devastating graphic images and videos of the people of Syria on the television, newspapers and Facebook. It was heart-breaking. We decided that we had to do something about it.”

Niall O’Keeffe, who oversees Trócaire’s work in Syria and who will speak on the night, thanked the committee for organising the event.

“People have been struggling to survive for six years due to this war. Families have been separated and lives destroyed as people are caught in the crossfire.

“Trócaire is providing vital aid to people in Syria. I recently travelled to Damascus and I met with families who are surviving because of the aid we are providing. We are incredibly appreciative to the people of Galway for supporting this initiative and helping us to continue to help people cope in the face of such appalling violence.”

Carroll continued, “We decided that we would like to raise as much money as possible. We want to get it directly to the children and people of Syria in order to help reduce the amount of suffering that they are experiencing, by providing much needed food and shelter. Trócaire’s projects on the ground are a practical and immediate way to do this.”

Sean Slattery and the Connections will provide live music entertainment on the night and will be followed by a DJ.
