Garda in critical condition following road crash in Cork

Dave Hanratty

The incident took place on Sunday night.

A member of An Garda Síochána is in critical condition following a serious road traffic collision that took place in Cork on Sunday evening, 13 November.

Shortly before 7pm on Sunday, an unmarked Garda patrol car was assisting a broken-down vehicle on the N25 at the Youghal bypass.

During this time, the unmarked car was struck by another vehicle. A Garda member suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision and was removed from the scene and brought to Cork University Hospital.

Following surgery, he remains in a critical condition as of Monday morning.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the incident was also taken to Cork University Hospital. Their injuries are understood to be non-life threatening.

The Youghal bypass on the N25 will remain closed off to the public until approximately midday on Monday to allow a forensic examination of the scene to be carried out.

Local traffic will be detoured through Youghal town. Road users coming from the Wexford direction are encouraged to use the N72 Dungarvan to Fermoy Road in order to get to Cork city.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses. Anyone who may have camera footage – including dash-cam – and was travelling on the Youghal bypass N25 between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm on Sunday is asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 462 1550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
