Garda injured following attempted car seizure in Kildare

The Garda was injured after being carried on the vehicle for a distance.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following an incident on Friday (26 August) in Kildare on where a Garda was injured.

The incident occurred on the R403 near the Barberstown Roundabout in Straffan at approximately 11.45pm.

Gardaí were in the process of seizing a vehicle under the Road Traffic Act when the driver of the offending vehicle fled the scene.

A Garda who attempted to stop the car was carried on the car for a distance before falling from the vehicle.

The man was taken to Naas General Hospital for treatment of head and upper body injuries, and has since been released to recover at home.

The vehicle was subsequently located following a single vehicle crash in Straffan.

On Saturday morning (27 August), a man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the incident following a search by a number of Garda units.

He is currently detained at Leixlip Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Straffan/Barberstown Cross areas and the Straffan Village area between 11.40pm and 12.15am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
