Department of Justice confirms six Garda stations in Ireland are to be reopened

A final report was submitted by the Garda commissioner on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that six Garda stations in Ireland are to be reopened as part of a pilot scheme in accordance with the Programme for Government.

Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, briefed Government on a final report submitted by the Garda Commissioner on Tuesday, in which it was decided to open six former Garda stations at Stepaside and Rush in Dublin; Leighlinbridge in Carlow, Donard in Wicklow, Ballinspittle in Cork and Bawnboy in Cavan.

In 2013, it was announced that 100 Garda stations throughout the country would be closed as part of the Garda District and Station Consolidation programme; the full list of stations can be viewed here.

The Garda Commissioner has written to the Office of Public Works to progress the matter of the reopening of the six stations; the report by the Garda Commissioner can be read in full here.
