The main street of a busy Longford town has been closed 'until further notice' after a man was hit by a car yesterday.
The collision involved a vehicle and a pedestrian yesterday at 5.15pm.
The incident occurred on Ballymahon's Main Street.
The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, was left seriously injured in the incident.
He was rushed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment.
The driver, an adult male in his late teens, was uninjured.
According to reports, the road remains closed as Garda conduct a technical examination of the scene.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with information.
They said: “Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were in the area between 5pm and 5.30pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 335 0570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
Ballymahon Vocational School also warned parents to allow more time for their journey when dropping off kids at the school.
They wrote on Facebook: “We have been informed by members of An Garda Siochana that Main Street Ballymahon is closed from Nallys Corner, N55/R292 Junction Edgeworthstown Road down to the Bridge and Athlone Road Junction until further notice.
“Please make the required adjustments for school [this] morning.
“Our thoughts and concerns are with all those involved at this time.”
