The discovery was found as Gardaí were carrying out speed checks in County Cork.
Gardaí carrying out speed checks as part of Operation Thor in County Cork found a large sum of cash stashed into a pair socks after a driver fled the scene upon being pulled over.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday 25 March in Fermoy involved Gardaí pulling over a man who then ran into a neighbouring field when Gardaí stopped the vehicle he was driving.
“The driver was pulled in but fled the scene – taking time to dispose of some property before being arrested,” Gardai wrote on the Southern Region Facebook page.
“Last Sunday, Fermoy Gardaí carrying out a speed check observed a vehicle they suspected was committing Road Traffic offences. The driver was pulled in but fled the scene – taking time to dispose of some property before being arrested. A follow-up search revealed an interesting find.”
The man was eventually caught and arrested. He has since appeared in court, charged with dangerous driving.
