Gardaí intervene and restrain suspect who was armed with a knife in Limerick

The man in his 20s is alleged to have stabbed another man, leaving him with serious injuries.

Gardaí are investigating a serious assault that occurred on Saturday (11 April) at a residence in the Ellen Street area of Limerick city.

Around 5.10pm, Gardaí were called to the scene of a reported disturbance where they observed a man armed with a knife seriously assaulting another man.

In a statement, Gardaí said due to the imminent threat to life and the proximity of the assailant to the injured party, two Gardaí were forced to physically intervene and manually restrain the attacker.

A man in his 20s was arrested and the knife was recovered and seized by Gardaí.

A man in his 50s sustained a number of apparent stab wounds during the assault and was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he is currently being treated for serious injuries.

The arrested man is currently being detained at Henry Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward and for anyone who was in the Ellen Street area at approximately 5.10pm to contact Gardaí.
