Video footage that appears to show the attack has gone viral online.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that a man in his 40s was brought to University Hospital Galway with injuries following an attack on Xian Street Food, a Chinese restaurant on Quay Street in Galway. The man’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident occurred at around 5.45pm on Thursday (16 April).

A short video purporting to show the incident has gone viral on social media, and shows people kicking in the door of a Chinese restaurant while shouting in the street. The video has drawn a reaction of outrage online.

Gardaí are now investigating the incident as criminal damage, but as of Friday morning, no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Politicians have commented on the incident, including Mairéad Farrell TD, who tweeted: “Disturbing reports about a racist incident in Galway City towards Chinese businesses, racism has no place in our society.”
