Gardaí arrest man in relation to a murder in Cavan on New Year’s Eve

A 40-year-old man was murdered in Ballyjamesduff on 31 December.

Gardaí investigating the murder of a 40-year-old man in Ballyjamesduff on 31 December have arrested a 38-year-old man in Cork in connection with the investigation.

The man was arrested in Cork City centre early on Thursday morning and is currently detained at the Bridewell Garda Station in Cork under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The deceased, Marek Swider, who was originally from Poland but had been living in Cavan for more than ten years, was stabbed in an incident at Dublin Street in Ballyjamesduff at approximately 11pm on Sunday, 31 December.

Gardaí contacted the deceased’s family in Poland in the aftermath of the incident and a Family Liaison Officer was appointed.

A post-mortem examination on the body took place on Monday, 1 January.

Investigations are continuing.
