Both An Garda Síochána and the Revenue Commissioners have warned the public that a fresh text message scam is doing the rounds.
Gardaí in Donegal have issued a statement which contains details of the scam: “There have been reports of an unsolicited text message being sent with the sender details displaying as ‘REVENUE’ and the message outlines that a refund is available and is allegedly sent by the ‘ROS.Team’.”
The text messages promise the recipient large amounts of money is exchange for personal details.
“When the injured party clicks the hyperlink embedded in the text message they are brought to what appears to be a legitimate ROS (Revenue Online) website and there are numerous text boxes seeking the injured parties’ details including name, DOB and bank details.
The Gardaí further warn that “the fraudulent website is well made will all associated colours, images and text as used in the legitimate ROS website.”

The Revenue Commissioners never send emails or text messages requiring customers to send personal information via email, text or pop-up windows.
Revenue has advised that anyone who does receive a text like the above should simply delete it. If you’ve already given your information to the scammers, you are advised to contact your bank.
