Two Gardaí hospitalised after being "viciously assaulted" in Dublin

One of the Gardaí remains in hospital.

Two Gardaí have been hospitalised after being "viciously assaulted" in Dublin in the early hours of Monday (21 November).


At around 12.45am, two members of An Garda Síochána - one male, one female - responded to a call concerning a public order incident at a licensed premises on Ballyfermot Road.

On arrival at the scene, the two Gardaí engaged with a number of individuals on the street.

In the course of dealing with the incident, both were assaulted by a number of people that were present and called for assistance from nearby colleagues who arrived shortly after.

Two male suspects - one aged in his 50s and one aged in his 30s - were arrested at the scene for assault contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.


They have been detained at Ballyfermot Garda Station in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A female suspect aged in her 50s was also arrested at the scene for offences contrary to the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994.

"Viciously Assaulted"

Meanwhile, both Garda members were taken by ambulance to St James' Hospital.


One member has since been discharged and the second remains in hospital pending further assessment in relation to the injuries they sustained in the course of the incident.

"My thoughts this morning are with our two colleagues from Ballyfermot who were viciously assaulted last night whilst going about their normal duties, protecting communities in the Ballyfermot area," Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis, Dublin Region, said in a statement.

"I absolutely condemn the actions of the individuals involved in this serious incident and wish the members that were injured a full and speedy recovery."

A Garda spokesperson stated that a full investigation into the serious assault has been initiated at Ballyfermot Garda Station.


Gardaí are appealing for any person that witnessed the incident or that has any video footage of the incident to contact the investigating team at Ballyfermot Garda Station at 01 6667200, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

An Garda Síochána have also asked that any footage of the incident is not circulated further on social media.
