Gay Byrne is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

A statement from RTÉ said, “RTÉ can confirm that Gay Byrne suffered a heart attack and is recovering well in hospital. The Byrne family have asked for privacy at this time.

“All his friends and colleagues across RTÉ are thinking of him and wish him all the best with his recovery.”

The legendary broadcaster is 81 years old and, since retiring, the former host of The Late Late Show has continued to broadcast on RTÉ Lyric FM and interview famous figures in the TV series, The Meaning of Life.

We wish Uncle Gaybo a speedy recovery.
