German MP dies in Limerick after flight makes emergency stop in Shannon Airport

The flight landed in Shannon on Sunday after crew declared a medical emergency.

A woman has died in hospital in Limerick after the transatlantic flight on which she was travelling diverted to Shannon Airport early on Sunday morning.

Bild reported Karin Strenz, an MP in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the German Bundestag, lost consciousness on the flight from Cuba to Germany.

Condor flight DE199 was west of Ireland on its way to Frankfurt when the crew declared a medical emergency.

She was later pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick.

The 53-year-old, who is a member of Angela Merkel’s CDU party, was travelling with her husband at the time of the incident.

A post mortem examination will be carried out.
