For the first time since the end of the Cold War the German population are being asked by their government to stock up on essential supplies.
Germany is currently on high alert after two Islamist attacks and a shooting rampage in a separate shopping centre by a teenager last month.
The German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS), quoted the government’s Concept for Civil Defence as saying “the population will be obliged to hold an individual supply of food for ten days”.
People will also be required to stockpile enough drinking water to last for five days according to the plan, further details of which will be released on Wednesday.
The Concept for Civil Defense said an armed attack on Germany was unlikely however they urged people to “prepare appropriately for a development that could threaten our existence and cannot be categorically ruled out in the future”.
The current M15 threat level from international terrorism to the UK and Northern Ireland is set to SEVERE.
The Republic has no threat level gauge at present.
