An Gardai Siochána are set to bulk up their numbers with hundreds of new recruits next year. According to Today FM, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald announced at a graduation ceremony at the Garda College in Templemore yesterday that at least 500 Gardai will be recruited next year. The news comes amidst calls from the public and members of the Gardai to increase Garda numbers in an attempt to clamp down on crime throughout the country. Following cost-cutting measures in 2008, there was a five-year period during which there were no new recruits added to An Garda Síochána and it is believed that approximately 30,000 people expressed an interest in joining the force at the time.
