Glasnevin 1916 memorial wall defaced in “act of callous vandalism” on Saturday night

Carl Kinsella

A wall commemorating those who lost their lives in the 1916 Easter Rising appears to have been vandalised on Saturday night.

A photo by Conor O’Mearain shows the wall covered in splashes of white and yellow paint over many of the names of those who died.

The Glasnevin Trust has issued a statement on the apparent act of vandalism, calling it “callous,” and confirming that they are working with the Gardaí on the matter.

“Glasnevin Trust can confirm that the Necrology Wall, unveiled as part of the 1916 centenary commemoration and listing the names of all who lost their lives in the Rising, was vandalised at Glasnevin Cemetery during the night.

This was an act of callous vandalism. Glasnevin Trust is currently engaging with the Gardaí on the matter and will not be commenting further at this time.”
