Good news Tipp and Kilkenny fans, there will be no rail strike this weekend

It’s good news for everyone, of course, but the news will come as a huge relief to Tipperary and Kilkenny fans attending the All-Ireland hurling final this weekend.

It’s good news for everyone, of course, but the news will come as a huge relief to Tipperary and Kilkenny fans attending the All-Ireland hurling final this weekend.

In the early hours of this morning, Irish Rail were able to confirm that planned industrial action for this weekend (Sunday 7 and Monday 8 September) and on Sunday 21 December (the day of the All-Ireland Football Final) had been called off and that full services will be operating on all of those days.

SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union agreed on a new set of proposals from the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) after talks went on until 1.30am last night and while industrial action has been called off, the proposals will have to be put to a ballot of union members to see if they will be accepted.

Proposed temporary pay cuts at Iarnród Éireann have been postponed pending the outcome of that ballot, but for now, the news that the planned strike action will not go ahead will come as a relief to thousands of Irish Rail and DART passengers, particularly after strike action last month caused such disruption on the weekend of the first All-Ireland football semi-final between Mayo and Kerry.

Tipperary and Kilkenny fans travelling to the big match this weekend can now plan their journey knowing that no strike action will take place; for more details on the timetable on Sunday and over the weekend, check out the Irish Rail website.
