Good news for those in isolated areas…

A new rural evening and night time bus service will launch in a number of areas in Ireland at the end of next month.

The move was announced by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross and is aimed at helping to stop rural isolation.

According to RTÉ, the move will add 188 extra trips a week to the country’s rural transport network, and will service functions like bingo and trips to local pubs.

Nineteen counties are included in the trial, among them Kerry, Cork, Donegal, Kildare, Wicklow, Louth, Waterford, Cavan, Monaghan, Offaly and Laois.

The move will cost the government €450,000 over the six month trial period and most of the services will run from 6pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, Ross said that no applications for the trial were turned down and any counties excluded from the service had not made any application.

The service will be examined on a route by route basis when the trial period expires in December.
