An emotional Eamon Dunphy pays tribute to his “great friend” Bill O’Herlihy on RTÉ radio

"He was by far the most important person on that panel"

Eamon Dunphy has been talking to Áine Lawlor on RTÉ radio about the passing of his great friend and colleague, Bill O’Herlihy.

Speaking on News At One on RTÉ Radio1, Dunphy said:

“He made a massive contribution to the happiness that people derive from sport. He was by far the most important person on that panel, he was the catalyst for all that was good on it.

“That [Bill’s approach] is the essence of good journalism. You make people want to engage, you don’t make it obtuse, you render it human. To do that requires great skill.

“It’s knowing what the story is, knowing what the contradictions are between the three people you have on and sometimes it’s about making them very angry!”

A clearly emotional Dunphy finished up by saying about his great friend:

“He was a fabulous man – a husband, a father; I’m broken.”
