Headline of the day after government loses Seanad vote and Labour talk of second referendum

JOE

After Friday’s referendum, the government were left a bit embarrassed, but it seems they’re prepared to go back to the public again

It wouldn’t be the first time that the politicians have decided to got back to the polls after losing a referendum, but earlier today Labour were talking of returning to the ballot boxes again on the issue of the Seanad.

According to The Irish Independent, Brendan Howlin told RTE Radio that they may have to return to the people for another referendum on the issue of reform of the Upper House, after the people voted against the government on the issue.

He stated that there were reforms that they could make as it stands, but major change would require a return to the ballot boxes to see what the people think, although he promised that the government would look to move speedily on the issue.

Of course, the lads in the ‘Yes’ campaign got a bit of a black eye on this referendum, and the papers have been having a bit of fun with Enda & Co. as a result, perhaps the best of which was this great headline from The Sunday World
