Here’s what all the different weather warnings mean

Weather warnings are issued to warn the public of approaching weather conditions that are out of the ordinary and have the potential to be hazardous to the public or property.

There are currently a number weather warnings in place for Ireland ahead of Storm Brendan, which is set to track across Ireland on Monday.

Two Orange wind warnings are in effect and one yellow warning, but what do these actually mean?

Well, Met Éireann has linked up with the MeteoAlarm network of European national forecasters to align the national weather warning system with other European countries.

Green:
No severe weather expected, however a minor event may cause local impact

Yellow:
The weather is potentially dangerous, but on a localised level. There is no threat to the general population. The weather phenomena that have been forecast are not unusual, but be attentive if you intend to practice activities exposed to meteorological risks. Keep informed about the expected meteorological conditions and do not take any avoidable risk.

Wind: mean speeds 50-65km/h.
Gusts: 90-110km/h.
Rain: 30mm-50mm in 24 hrs.

Orange:
The weather is dangerous. Unusual meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Damage and casualties are likely to happen. Be very vigilant and keep regularly informed about the detailed expected meteorological conditions. Be aware of the risks that might be unavoidable. Follow any advice given by your authorities.

Wind: mean speeds 65-80km/h.
Gusts: 110-130km/h.
Rain: 50mm-70mm in 24 hrs.

Red:
The weather is very dangerous. Exceptionally intense meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Major damage and accidents are likely, in many cases with threat to life over a wide area. Keep frequently informed about detailed expected meteorological conditions and risks. Follow orders and any advice given by your authorities under all circumstances, be prepared for extraordinary measures.

Gusts: 110-130km/h.
Rain: 50mm-70mm in 24 hrs.
