Man arrested following fatal hit and run in Cavan

A man in his 50s died during the incident.

Gardaí have arrested a man after discovering a vehicle that took part in a fatal hit and run last month.

Investigators located the vehicle involved in the incident, and have seized the car to undergo a technical examination.

A man in his late 30s was arrested Tuesday evening (6 September) and is currently detained pursuant to the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Bailieborough Garda Station.

He can be detained for a period of up to 24 hours.

Shortly after 12pm on Friday (19 August), the body of a man in his 50s was discovered by a road user along the N3 near Billis Bridge in the townland of Ballyjamesduff.

It is understood the incident occurred sometime between 10pm on Thursday, 18 August and 12pm on the Friday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene and the man was pronounced dead, with his body then taken to the mortuary at Cavan General Hospital.

A Garda spokesperson said that, following an examination of the area, it was identified that the man was struck by a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

Investigations are ongoing.
