HSE worker given 561 years to pay back nearly €200k in overpay

It’s a question of time vs. money

The HSE has struck a rather unusual deal with a former employee regarding overpay.

According to a report in The Irish Examiner, the HSE managed to overpay a now retired employee by €191,225 over the course of eight years, but thanks to a new repayment deal the person in question has 561 years to pay it back.

If they put €341 aside every year then they’ll have it paid off just in time.

So how did this even happen in the first place? The unnamed employee continued to receive full pay from 2002 up to their retirement in 2010, even after their hours were reduced.

That wasn’t the only sizeable overpay recorded in the audit as overpayments of €85,865, €55,529 and €46,373, among other large sums, were also recorded.

In total, a whopping 1,144 overpayments were made over a 14-year period with 41 of those amounting to €10,000 or more.

The news was revealed in an internal payroll audit at the HSE’s Dublin-Mid-Leinster and Dublin-North East regions.

The auditors revealed an interesting bit of information in the report, and that was the fact that only 37 per cent of employees had gotten in touch with payroll to let them know they were being overpaid.

Would you confess? Or would you keep the extra cash and say nothing?
