Irish Mail on Sunday apologise for publishing unauthorised interview with family of Buncrana victims

The apology appeared on Page 2 of today’s paper.

The Irish Mail on Sunday has issued an apology to Louise James, who lost her partner, her mother, her sister and her two sons in a tragic accident in Buncrana last month.

Sean McGrotty, his children Mark and Evan, his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels and her daughter Jodie Lee Daniels lost their lives when their car slipped into Lough Swilly in a tragic accident in the Donegal town just two weekends ago.

An article including quotes from Louise James was published in the Irish Mail on Sunday last weekend, but it has since emerged that James had not consented to an interview and was speaking to a reporter in a purely private manner.

The apology, published in the Irish Mail on Sunday today, reads: “Last Sunday, we published an article quoting from Louise James, who had lost her partner, mother, sister and two sons in the Buncrana tragedy.

“We wish to make it clear that Louise understood that she was speaking to our reporter in a purely private capacity and had not consented to being interviewed. She did not wish to give interviews to any media outlets.

“We are happy to make this clear and to apologise to Louise and her family for the upset caused.”
