Irish Rail has lodged a planning application for a new train station at Dunkettle in Co Cork, the second such application in the county in a matter of weeks as work ramps up on a major overhaul of commuter services in the region.
The Dunkettle bid follows a recent application for a station at Blackpool, and the two are the first of eight new stations to be delivered under the Cork commuter rail programme, as The Journal reported. The plan aims to “transform rail services in the Cork region by building to a ten-minute frequency across all three lines of the commuter network”.
Both the Dunkettle and Blackpool stations would be built on existing Irish Rail land, with Dunkettle set to be a major park and ride facility offering around 300 car parking spaces, and scope for more on a phased basis depending on demand.
Strategically placed near the Dunkettle interchange with easy access to the M8 and N25, the station is intended to “ease congestion on the intersection and intercept traffic before it enters the city”. Served by the Cork to Cobh and Cork to Midleton lines, it would provide an initial 15-minute service for the Dunkettle catchment. For more Irish news, stay with us.
