Don’t get caught out…

Irish Rail have warned customers to be wary of a “ticket packet begging scam” being carried out on a number of Irish trains.

The scam involves tissue packets being placed on seats along the train and if commuters touch the packet, they will be approached by this group of ‘sellers’ and asked to pay for them. If you refuse to pay them, they turn aggressive in an effort to make people part with their money.

The group are disguised as beggars but are suspected to have connections with criminal gangs.

Speaking to 98FM News, spokesman for Irish Rail Barry Kenny, said there have been at least two arrests and the company is deploying security teams to help combat the growing problem.

“Initially we had seen some cases on the Maynooth line and some instances were also reported on the DART,” Kenny said.

Passengers are urged not to part with their cash to those perpetrating the scam and to report any incidents to Irish Rail.
