Very sad news.

An Irish woman has been killed along with 16 others in a bus crash in Dubai on Thursday.

The bus from Oman crashed into a warning sign coming off a major highway in Dubai, killing 17 of the passengers on board, according to authorities.

The driver, who is in his 50s, is receiving treatment for minor injuries and an investigation is underway.

Dubai police said it occurred on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Local media said the vehicle swerved to avoid a height restriction sign, which then sliced through the roof of the left side of the bus.

“Sometimes a slight error or negligence during the driving of the vehicle leads to dire consequences,” police chief Maj Gen Abdullah Khalifa Al-Marri said.

Omani bus company Mwasalat tweeted its “deepest condolences” and announced its services between Muscat and Dubai were suspended until further notice.
