Irish woman dies following avalanche at mountain range

An Irish woman has reportedly died after she was caught in an avalanche in a mountain range in Argentina.

Local reports say that the woman, who has not been named yet, was skiing with two Argentinian men on the Lopez Mountain in the Bariloche area, when the avalanche occurred on Wednesday, September 4.

One of the men is reported missing the other received injuries from the incident.

According to Argentinian news site La Nacion, the tragedy happened around 5pm and was 2,075 metres above sea level.

It has been reported that the woman was on holiday in the area and was caught up in the Avalanche close to a lodge used by hikers.

A spokesman for local mountain rescue, Club Andino Bariloche Relief Commission, confirmed that the Irish woman had died.

The mountain rescue said that the rescued man was suffering from hypothermia, but no other information was given.

A reported 20 people worked in the search for survivors in the avalanche deposit.

Lopez Mountain is located in what is known as the Circuito Chico tourist area. Its peak is some 2,100 meters high and it is popular with tourists for skiing, hiking and zip-lining.
