The incident is believed to have caused upset amongst some exam students.

Second-year students in IT Carlow had to resit an exam on Tuesday after it emerged that the marking scheme for the original exam paper had been mistakenly attached to papers distributed to exam students.

The exam paper, distributed to second year students in the Sport Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy course at IT Carlow, was immediately withdrawn once the mistake was realised and a second paper was distributed 30 minutes later.

Speaking to JOE, one of the students who was sitting the exam said that the incident caused upset among some students and that at least two students refused to take the second paper.

In a statement to JOE, a spokesperson for IT Carlow said: “As the exam paper was being distributed, a photocopy of a marking scheme for that paper was mistakenly attached to some of the papers. The exam paper was immediately withdrawn.

“As per the Institute’s quality assurance process and higher education regulations, two different papers are prepared in advance for each exam in case of any issue and are approved in advance by the external examiner.

“There was a 30-minute break while the second paper was brought to the exam hall. It is unfortunate but I heard it was all done very calmly with minimal fuss.”
