Investigation launched into violent incident involving group of youths in Kerry

Video footage of a broad daylight assault has been widely distributed on social media.

Gardaí are investigating an apparent incident of assault that took place in Kerry last weekend.

Footage shared on social media appears to show a gang of young men assaulting another man on the street in broad daylight, while also hurling verbal abuse at the victim.

The incident took place in Killarney on Saturday evening (21 May) and no arrests have been made in connection with the assault.

"On Saturday, Gardaí responded to reports of a disturbance involving a group of youths on New Street / Chapel Lane, Killarney, shortly after 8.30pm," a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told JOE.

"There were no reports of any injuries and no arrests were made at the scene. Enquires into the incident are ongoing."

Anyone with relevant information is asked to make contact with Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160.

Local station Radio Kerry shared footage of the incident on Twitter.

It marks the second such high profile instance of violence in Ireland that has been shared on social media across the past 48 hours. On Tuesday evening, an altercation took place at Dublin Airport.

In videos posted online, two men can be seen fighting with a group of others surrounding them. A third man then enters, and begins to punch one of the original two until he falls to the ground.

The third man then begins to stamp the head of the man on the ground. As he stamps, onlookers rush in to break up the fight, before dragging the man who had been attacked out from the fray by his arms, seemingly unconscious.

In a statement to JOE, An Garda Síochána said:

"Gardaí, with the assistance of the DAA Airport Police responded to a public order incident at Dublin Airport on Tuesday evening, 24 May, 2022.

"One man has since been taken to Beaumont Hospital where he is receiving treatment. One man (20s) was arrested and was detained at Swords Garda station. He has since been charged and is due to appear before Swords District Court [on] 14 June, 2022."
