Brexit is chaos.
Theresa May is proceeding with her Chequers plan even though all the other EU leaders have told her it’s a no-go.
Labour’s John McDonnell is insisting that any possible second referendum won’t include a Remain option.
Things are looking ever-more perilous for everyone who wants to avoid to No Deal Brexit, and a hard border across the island or Ireland. Sadly, it seems as though many politicians are not listening.
One exception appears to be Labour’s Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Stephen Pound. In an interview with Channel 4 at today’s Labour Conference, Pound said: “This is not about people in the Labour Party striking postures, this is life and death to the people of Ireland. The whole island of Ireland.
“If you look at the border, 302 miles long, if you think that a camera up a pole can provide a border security alert… That will become a target. If you have a target you have to defend a target. If you have a defender, you have to actually have someone to protect the defender.
“Before you know where you are, you’ve got uniformed UK BI or customs officers on the border. If you do that then, I’m not being hysterical about this, but the peace process is finished. If the peace process is finished then peace on the island of Ireland is under huge threat.
“So if we cannot get that right, then we cannot get anything right. The Irish border is the issue.”
