There appears to be mixed messaging coming from the Government with regards to quarantining.

Leo Varadkar has contradicted Stephen Donnelly on his definition of “quarantining” for people coming into Ireland.

This comes after Donnelly said that those who are quarantining at home only have to stay inside their house, and not inside their room.

Since then, Leo Varadkar has seemingly contradicted the Minister for Health’s instructions, saying that you do have to stay in your room when returning from overseas.

Simon Coveney also commented on the subject, saying that those quarantining should remain in their rooms if they live with others.

Donnelly has since said that said there will be no “legal basis” to tell people to self-isolate in their bedrooms but that “strong public health advice” will contain this message.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald described Donnelly’s comments as “very alarming”.

McDonald went on to say that the system of mandatory hotel quarantine is a “no brainer”.

She said: “The fact is that the Gardaí of course can not police every bedroom in the country, we’re not asking them to…

“It’s a no brainer, Taoiseach. I can’t understand your resistance. The clearest message that can be sent for non-essential travel to stay is mandatory quarantine.

“Why in God’s name are you resisting something that is so obviously necessary?”

An Taoiseach confirmed today that approximately 800 people flew into Dublin Airport on Tuesday.
