What a way this would be to start 2018.

Ireland’s latest Euromillions jackpot victory has understandably been the source of much excitement of late, prompting all of us to wonder what it would be like to win a life-changing amount of money.

That jackpot, though undoubtedly huge at €38.9 million, paled in comparison to some of the eye-watering amounts won in the Euromillions in the past, as it does to what’s on offer in the US this week.

It’s a little under ten times less than what’s on offer, in fact.

This week’s Powerball jackpot in the United States is worth an estimated $460 million (approximately €383 million), the tenth largest lottery prize in US history and the largest since a whopping $758.7 million was claimed in August, which was the second largest lottery prize in US history.

Although the odds of winning are 292.2 million to one, someone has to win it after all and if you want to enter the draw on Wednesday night (approximately 4am on Thursday morning Irish time), you can do so on Lottoland here.

As well as pointing out the prohibitive odds, we should also mention that the value of the jackpot can only be claimed by winners willing to take the annuity option, which means it will be paid out over 29 years.

Those who want to claim the cash prize would have to settle for a sum in the region of $291 million (approximately €242 million), although we’re sure that the prospective winner will find some way to cope with the deficit if they end up taking that option.

It could be you.
